Abarth 500C Cabriolet
In keeping with Abarth’s philosophy of “Making the ordinary Extraordinary”, Abarth have taken a convertible car and made it its very own. The design and development of the car has seen important changes to both its appearance and engineering.
The convertible with the Scorpion logo allows customers to experience wind in the hair, sun on the face motoring, with the unmistakeable Abarth soundtrack from its of 1.4 16v Turbo 140 bhp engine.
The lengthened dynamic spoiler reminds the observer that the Abarth 500C is first and foremost a sports car. As well as accentuating the car’s sporty look, the spoiler also ensures a better CZ value and more effective air flow distribution.
Precise aerodynamics have made it possible to minimise turbulence when driving with the hood down, leaving occupants free to sit back and enjoy the road ahead and the unmistakable Abarth Soundtrack
With the hood up, the Abarth 500C delivers the sort of performance a hard-top car would be proud of. The electric hood opens by sliding along lateral guides, meaning that the car can be enjoyed at any time of the year.
The electric hood has a very wonderfully elegant opening mechanism, which makes use of impressive technical solutions, such as the glass rear window and the third brake light incorporated into the spoiler.
In addition to the classic Abarth body colours, the Abarth 500C also offers two new and original Bi-Colour paint schemes. For those who like strong contrasts, Scorpione Black above is paired with Gara White below; while for those who prefer something a little more elegant, there is Pista Grey above, paired with Campovolo Grey below.
For both these colour combinations, an optional Red Liner Pack (opt 5YR) is also available. This includes red brake callipers to go with the alloy wheels with red hubcaps, and a red ‘liner’ running along the length of the exterior and along the bottom of the central section of the dashboard, an element that simultaneously divides and unites the car’s twin souls: the performance of a genuine sports car ‘below’, with the attraction of a cabriolet ‘above’.
The look of the Abarth 500C is further enhanced by the choice of alloy wheels. The 16” wheels come as standard, while the 17” versions are available as an optional. The 17” wheels come in two style variants: a diamond-finish alloy wheel painted white, with a 5-petal design (opt 55E), and a diamond-finish alloy wheel with an anthracite background, with a 5-spoke design (opt 5FB).
Performace
Proof that the new Convertible is a genuine Abarth comes in the shape of the 1.4 16v Turbo T-Jet 140 engine, an engine that delivers truly impressive performance, with a peak torque of 206 Nm at 2000 rpm in Sport mode. An engine that guarantees thrilling performance while at the same time making the Abarth 500C a sheer pleasure to drive even for everyday use.
The engine is the tried and tested 4-cylinder, 16 valve, 1368 cc unit (supercharged by a fixed geometry IHI RHF3-P turbocharger) capable of powering the Abarth Convertible along at a top speed 205 km/h, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.1 seconds: making it by far the best-performing convertible/cabriolet in it’s class. Credit for this must also go to the overboost function, activated by the ‘Sport’ button, which modifies the control unit mapping and the turbo pressure, as well as the load on the steering wheel. The car provides performance worthy of an Abarth, with extremely low fuel consumption: just 6.5 l/100 km in the combined cycle.
Sparkling and progressive, the new engine is also eco-friendly: the new Abarth Convertible, fitted as standard with the Abarth Competizione electro-hydraulic sequential gearbox complies with Euro5 standards, with CO2 emissions of just 151 g/km.
The “Abarth Competizione” MTA gearbox
It was back in 1949 that Karl Abarth officially started producing a racing gearbox with steering wheel controls for the Fiat Topolino, enabling quick gearshifts during races.
Now, more than 60 years later, with the same philosophy, the electro-hydraulic Abarth Competizione 5-speed gearbox comes with a driver interface featuring gearshift paddles behind the steering wheel, in a configuration that accentuates the ergonomics and effectiveness of the system in sporting conditions.
Offered as standard on the Abarth 500C, the Abarth Competizione gearbox consists of a traditional mechanical gearbox on which the manual gear change system has been replaced by an actuator controlled electronically by a TCU (Transmission Control Unit), resulting in smoother gearshifts and greater mechanical efficiency.
Based on the experience gained from the world of competition, the engineers at Abarth designed the Abarth Competizione with two driving modes: ‘auto’, suitable for a driving style where comfort takes precedence; and ‘manual’ which is more suited to a sporty driving style. Both modes can be used with the ‘sport’ setting, with notable effects on the speed of gearshifts.
Dynamic Safety
The Abarth 500C offers the same standards of safety as its saloon counterpart, making it one of the safest cars in the Small Sporty Cabrio segment.
The Abarth 500C comes with a class leading 7 airbags as standard (two dual-stage front airbags, two window-bags, two side-bags and a driver’s knee bag):
In addition to the now classic ABS with EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution), ESP (Electronic Stability Program) with ASR (Anti Slip Regulation), HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assistance) and Hill Holder, the new Abarth 500C also comes with the TTC Torque Transfer Control system as standard.
TTC improves the transfer of engine torque to the wheels, and guarantees outstanding dynamic behaviour on bends, making it safer and more fun to drive.
The impressive range of standard safety equipment on the Abarth 500C includes Xenon headlights, which deliver better performance due to the increased quantity of light (triple that of traditional halogen light), and produce a beam with greater depth, resulting in better visibility, while the warm colour of the light, similar to daylight, makes obstacles easier to see.
Lastly, the stable and effective braking system, together with the outstanding performance provided by the 140 bhp engine and highly predictable handling, allow the new car to easily negotiate critical situations.
